It’s been a really long, cold winter and most of us are excited about the temperatures rising in the spring. But with the warmer temperatures comes the spring thaw. If the snow melts too quickly there could be some water damage to your home.
Here are some tips to prevent your home from the damage spring thaw can cause;
If your roof has a lot of snow on it, use a roof rake to pull the snow off. Don’t go on the roof yourself and make sure your rake has a long handle so you don’t end up with snow on your head.
Once you’re sure you have enough snow off of the roof, check the gutter to make sure they’re clear so any melting snow can drain properly.
Check your attic to make sure your roof is properly insulated. One major cause of icicles forming around your home is from heat escaping from the roof. You may want to consult a roofing contractor for this.
If you have a sump pump, check to make sure it’s in working order.
Most of the damage to a home will be to the basement. So after you’ve racked the snow off, shovel as much snow as you can away from the home. This way it will melt and drain away from your home. If you’ve removed your downspout extensions for the winter make sure you put them back on. If you haven’t removed them, then check to make sure they have not come loose over the winter or filled with snow or ice. Clean them out if they have.
Sometimes we get a really warm day in the spring and we all can’t wait to get outdoors again and we tend to forget about what the melting snow can do to our homes. It’s a good idea to take a few minutes each day during a fast snow melt and check your basement.
